The Main Street® philosophy is “economic development through historic preservation.” As an accredited NC Main Street community, Clayton follows that philosophy as a core value in the revitalization and future development of downtown Clayton.
The Clayton Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 7, 2010.

One of the tangible benefits of having a Contributing structure listed in the Historic District are the federal and state Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits.
The Clayton Historic Association (CHA) has a historic building Plaque Program which residential and commercial buildings may receive a historic plaque to commemorate its historical significance in Clayton.
