At the Jan. 18 Town Council meeting, Police Chief Greg Tart had the honor of presenting the Life Saving Award to four Clayton Police Department employees. These men took action in the face of danger to help individuals who, without immediate assistance, would have been in imminent danger of death.
Lt. LeQuire, Sgt. Mims, Officer Banks, and Officer Demarest received the Life Saving Award for their courageous dedication to providing safety and protecting life.
Chief Tart shared some background on why these men received this honorable award. The event discussed is a pending court case, and to protect the integrity of the case and judicial process only minimal details can be shared.
Lt. LeQuire, Sgt. Mims, Officer Banks, and Officer Demarest were all on duty when they received a call from Johnston County 911 for a single car motor vehicle accident. The vehicle had run off the road and hit a tree. The vehicle then flipped and landed upside down, blocking both lanes of traffic.
The officers responded, and when they arrived, they realized there was an engine fire on the vehicle. Officer Demarest retrieved his fire extinguisher from his car and immediately put out the fire. He then noticed two nine-month-old infants in the back seat of the vehicle. Officer Demarest climbed into the vehicle and rescued the infants from the car seat that had trapped them upside down. Lt. LeQuire, a certified paramedic, monitored the infants as the men awaited Johnston County EMS and Clayton Fire Department's arrival to the scene.
Sgt. Mims and Officer Banks attempted to locate the driver of the vehicle, who fled the scene on foot. While searching the area, they heard splashing sounds and discovered a woman who was struggling in a pond and asking for help. Sgt. Mims and Officer Banks found a boat and paddled out to retrieve the woman, potentially saving her from drowning.
"They will tell you this is a job. This is not a job - it's a calling," said Chief Tart. This story is evidence of that calling. These men exemplified commitment, selflessness, skillfulness, and more. Thank you, Lt. LeQuire, Sgt. Mims, Officer Banks, and Officer Demarest. It is an honor to recognize your service with the Life Saving Award.
